My grandfather and uncles on my mother’s side were a fun loving lot and knew how to have a good time. One of the highlights of my childhood was being taken, on a whim, along with my cousin, Rick, to see the Atlanta Braves play on the home field. We were quickly bored though and were given some cash to get rid of us. Seems like it was about $20 but in 1963, that went a long way. We bought junk souvenirs and corndogs and Rick bought me a small necklace with little purple stones that I still have. We wandered up to the empty seats where we almost immediately had opportunity to chase down a foul ball. Rick kept that. My grandfather drove home to Tuskeegee, Alabama, my uncles having drank one too many screwdrivers at the game. There was so much laughter. It was an unforgetable day, a beautiful fun and gentle time, and an exception to the normal get togethers. They are all gone now. But I like to remember them, not only for that wild and fun day, but for all the other days we spent just hanging out down by the pond or the ocean- fishin.’
